چکیده

The effect of particle size on shear strength of granular materials are investigated using direct shear tests. Small direct shear test (60 mm by 60 mm by 24 mm deep) were conducted for particles passing the sieves with opening size of 2.36 mm. Meanwhile, particles passing the standard 20 mm sieves were tested using large direct shear test (300 mm by 300 mm by 200 mm deep). The large direct shear tests and the small direct shear tests carried out using the same shearing rate of 0.09 mm/min and similar normal stresses of 100, 200 and 300 kPa. The results show that the peak and residual shear strength increases as particle size increases. Keywords—Particle size, shear strength, granular material, direct shear test.

A Study of the Rockfill Material Behavior in Large-Scale Tests

Inspecting the behavior of the rockfill materials is of significant importance in analysis of rockfill dams. Since the dimensions of grains in such materials are greater than the conventional sizes suitable for soil mechanics tests, it is necessary to experimentally study them in specific large-scale apparatuses. In this research, the behavior of rockfill materials in two large rockfill dams co...

Experimental Study on the Effect of Crumb Rubber on Shear Strength of Sandy Soil

Nowadays, soil reinforcement using polymer elements have been investigated by a number of researchers in order to increase the load capacity of soils. Reinforcing soils using fibers is a method of soil improvement, which offers a homogenous mixture in combination with soils, regarding their tensile strength. This combination maintains pressure loading capacity and properties in mutual resistant...

Particle-scale origins of shear strength in granular media

The shear strength of cohesionless granular materials is generally attributed to the compactness or anisotropy of their microstructure. An open issue is how such compact or anisotropic microstructures, and thus the shear strength, depend on the particle properties. We first recall the role of fabric and force anisotropies with respect to the critical-state shear stress. Then, a model of accessi...

Experimental and FDM study on the effect of geogrid tensile strength on pullout resistance

This paper presents the effect of geogrid tensile strength by calculating pullout resistance and geogrid-soil interaction mechanism. In order to investigate this interface, a series of pullout tests have been conducted by large scale reformed direct shear test apparatus in both cohesive and granular soils. In numerical, finite difference software FLAC3D has been carried out on experimental test...

Effects of shape and size polydispersity on strength properties of granular materials.

By means of extensive contact dynamics simulations, we analyze the combined effects of polydispersity both in particle size and in particle shape, defined as the degree of shape irregularity, on the shear strength and microstructure of sheared granular materials composed of pentagonal particles. We find that the shear strength is independent of the size span, but unexpectedly, it declines with ...
